1. JOB POSTING - Specialty Instructor - Vegetarian Cooking Programs

The Children's Garden and Exploring Toronto Programs develop and deliver garden and nature focused environmental programs and camps for children and youth. In the Spring of 2012 we are opening the new Children's Teaching Kitchen in High Park. For more information about the Programs please visit http://torontochildrensgarden.ca/.

Major Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize and implement creative and interactive, vegetarian cooking programs for children and youth
  • Provide positive learning and recreation experiences for participating children and youth
  • Ensure that all equipment and supplies are well maintained
  • Manage food inventory and purchase ingredients, as required
  • Liaise with parents and the public
  • Complete related administrative duties and written evaluations, as required

Qualifications

  • Educational background in culinary arts or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of and experience in delivering cooking programs to children and youth
  • Knowledge of and experience in preparing vegetarian and vegan dishes, with an emphasis on fresh, local and organic ingredients
  • Strong programming and leadership skills
  • Ability and interest to teach all ages
  • Administrative, organizational, research, and program development skills
  • Good communication and public relations skills
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR C

Period of Employment

  • April 15th to June 10th 2012, Sundays from 9:30am-3:00pm; some pre-season evening and/or weekend training may be required

2. JOB POSTING - Eco Program Expansion Assistant, Children's Garden and Exploring Toronto Programs

The Children's Garden and Exploring Toronto Programs develop and deliver garden and nature focused environmental programs and camps for children and youth. Since 2001 they have been supporting City of Toronto Recreation Centres to offer their own nature and garden programs. Major Responsibilities:

  • Supports the expansion of children's gardens and/or environmental programs city-wide
  • Assists in preparation and delivery of staff training in local ecology, organic gardening, children's environmental programming
  • Supports the administration, coordination and delivery of Children's Garden & Exploring Toronto Programs and community events
  • Researches, coordinates, produces and distributes supplies and resources for staff training, program development, special projects, promotion, reports and expansion
  • Assists and supports garden site design, preparation, planting, development, harvest and maintenance
  • Assists with coordination of program staff, volunteers, partnerships, sponsorships and program documentation
  • Liaises with parents, schools, community agencies, recreation staff and the public
  • Assists with reports
  • Responsible for office and clerical duties, including typing, filing, faxing, account keeping and database maintenance

Qualifications:

  • Experience in developing, coordinating and delivering children's recreational programming for children ages 3-12
  • Ability to work with, coordinate and supervise people of all ages, including children, youth and staff
  • Experience in organic gardening and garden design
  • Experience coordinating staff and volunteers
  • Experience and/or interest in outdoor environmental programming
  • Experience working independently as well as in groups
  • Administrative, organizational, researching, budgeting and accounting skills
  • Excellent written, communication, presentation and public relations skills

The Children's Garden and Exploring Toronto Programs offer garden and nature focused school programming in the spring and fall, and summer Eco Camps. Major Responsibilities:

  • Delivers curriculum based outdoor environmental education and gardening programs for school groups in spring and Eco Camp programs in summer (for one or all Eco Camps - Junior, Youth, Sprouts or Leader in Training)
  • Develops, coordinates, implements and evaluates programs and activities related to children's gardening, nature exploration and environmental issues for school groups and camp participants
  • Maintains children's garden as required, including watering, weeding, compost maintenance, etc.
  • Provides positive outdoor gardening, hiking and camp experiences for children and youth

  • Works with other area staff and attends training sessions
